GRAND ISLAND HISTORY: The week of Oct. 5 - Oct. 11

• The town should be looking to attract more light industry, said a recent letter from the Jaycees to the GI Planning Board. The group said more steps are needed “to prevent the community from being burdened with excessive taxation,” according to the Oct. 2, 1957, edition of the Island Dispatch.

• The Hooker Electrochemical Co. was granted permission to start laying the foundation of its $3.5 million research center on Long Road.

• A border war in Ireland prevented Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lazarus of West River Road from visiting Ireland during a recent European tour. Mr. Lazarus said France had “deteriorated greatly” since his last visit six years ago. Germany, however, is rebuilding industrially and expanding, he said. “The energetic Germans are at work daily by six in the morning,” Lazarus said.

• The Grandyle Pharmacy featured “Stopette” spray deodorant for 59 cents, Lady Esther “four-purpose face cream” was 65 cents, and a four-ounce bottle of Mennen “Afta” shave cost $1.
