Today’s Good News edition marks the third time we’ve done this special newspaper. One thing that many of us in the newspaper business hear repeatedly is that there isn’t enough good news in the newspaper. While there are a lot of positive stories in the paper on an almost daily basis, they are sometimes overshadowed by the unfortunate bad news items that happen.
We like to take this one edition each year and focus on all the positive things that are going on in our communities. In today’s edition you’ll read about Natalie Tolhurst, an 82-year-old Lockport resident who is still actively involved with Meals on Wheels. You’ll see a series of thank you letters from a 6th grade class at Lewiston Porter Middle School that will be sure to make you smile.
You’ll also read about the incredible courage of a local high school student, Megan Johnson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at 21-months of age. After enduring years of treatments she was diagnosed as cancer free and has just recently been named valedictorian of her graduating class. She now has plans to become a radiologist and help others that are facing the same thing she went through. A couple holiday cards she designed are being featured in the Paint Box Project that Roswell Park Cancer Institute puts out each year and you’ll read about all the money that has been donated to cancer research through this great project.
A special thank you to all of you who submitted your special Good News items for this edition. I am sure our readers will enjoy all of them.
One thing we struggle with each year as we’re working on this edition is what to do if something negative happens that we have to report on. We take very seriously the trust you place in us to provide you with the news and information you’re looking for and will cover anything that does happen, but may play it on the inside pages so that we can devote the majority of the paper to good news and your submissions. We hope you enjoy this special Good News edition.
As we celebrate this Thanksgiving season I would like to say a special “Thanks” to all of my co-workers at Greater Niagara Newspapers. Without their hard work and dedication we would not be able to do this every day. Thanks also to all of you, our readers and advertisers as well, for placing your trust in us throughout the year.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
