NOTEBOOK: Thanksgiving dining with Island friends
Thanksgiving dining with Island friends
No one needs to dine alone this Thanksgiving.
The Island Presbyterian Church is inviting the community to a free Thanksgiving Day feast.
“The idea rose from my congregation,” said the Rev. Diane Phinney. “They wanted to reach out to the community, especially to those who might otherwise be alone.”
The church, 1822 Huth Road, has a reputation for good cooking, Phinney added. The event starts at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, and people can stay as long as they like. Those who are planning to come are asked to call 773-6374, and leave a name and the number of guests.
Phinney says that people who don’t feel comfortable arriving empty-handed can bring a side dish or some pickles or relish to share.
Hot turkey sandwiches to help area vets
Those who are longing for a little pre-holiday turkey taste, will be glad to know that the DeGlopper Post will be selling hot turkey sandwiches with gravy and cranberry jelly to raise money for the holiday dinners at the Veteran’s Medical Center.
Stop in at the post, at 2121 Grand Island Blvd., between 4 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 18, and satisfy your turkey cravings while helping a good cause.
CORRECTION
Holiday shopping snafu
Hopefully, there were not too many disgruntled holiday shoppers at the VFW post last weekend. Due to a communications snafu, the dates for the Holiday Craft Show were printed incorrectly here.
Those who are shopping for holiday gifts such as jewelry, handcrafted children’s wood furniture, music boxes and even holiday decor, will find such things and more at the post’s craft show being held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19, at Knights headquarters, 1841 Whitehaven Road.
