GI NOTEBOOK: Art classes with perks

Art classes with perks

If you walked into the Java Shop on the boulevard Oct. 28, you would have seen a group of young people having a great time at the art classes that island artist Cathy Bridgeman is holding there.

“You should have seen the kids,” said café owner Kevin Doring, who owns the café with his wife, Dawn. “We had about 14 kids here, laughing and having a great time.”

The kid’s art, which is posted at the café along with some of Bridgeman’s own work, enhances the café environment as a gathering place for the Island community, Doring said.

He added that while the current set of classes are almost over, there is a possibility of a second series.

Parents interested in enrolling their kids in art classes that offer great “perks” should stop in at the café, 2271 Grand Island Blvd. For more information, visit www.thejavashopcafe.com.

Miniature furniture among gift ideas

Starting to feel a little stress about the upcoming holidays? Perhaps you can get into a festive mood and make some headway on your list at an upcoming craft show at the Knights of Columbus.

A woodworker who makes miniature furniture, including rockers and tables for children, will be among the crafters being featured at the craft show, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Knights headquarters, 1841 Whitehaven Road

“This will be a great event for those who want to start their Christmas shopping,” said Tim Byrne, who is in charge of the event. There will also be jewelry, music boxes, stained glass, and linens among the gift offerings, as well as holiday decorations including wreaths, wall hangings and ornaments, he said.

For more information, contact Tim at 822-7403.
