GI NOTEBOOK 9/29: Looking for good Italian bread?

Looking for good Italian bread?

Be sure to stop in and check out the two new lovely little food stores on the north end of Grand Island Boulevard.

At Island Farm Market and Garden Center, Islander Julie Rotella features fresh baked goods and import specialties along with sub sandwiches and prepared foods and such. She hand selects the plants and flowers herself in the garden area herself.

Just south of there, at the new Island Deli and Meat Market, Islanders Danielle and Todd St. Onge are offering hand cut steaks, other meats and imports as well as sandwiches. Danielle is following a life-long dream and left her job at General Motors to open the store.

As is true of all the little Island specialty shops, Islanders should remember that if we don’t use them, we lose them! Plus, it’s a good way to meet your neighbors!

Win snow plowing service and more

A whole season’s worth of snow plowing, a condo in Georgia, golf lessons, and Buffalo Bills and Sabres tickets, are among the silent auction items at a fundraiser this Sunday for Islander Shelagh Korman, who is battling bone cancer.

Her friend, Evie Swarts, who is running the event at the VFW Post on Grand Island Boulevard from 1 to 5 p.m., says there will also be more than 120 “wonderful” baskets to be raffled and great food for the $20 ticket. The proceeds go to help curb expenses for Shelagh. “We can’t cure her cancer but we can give her morale a boost by rallying around her on Sunday,” Swarts said.
