GI NOTEBOOK 9/30: Halloween event to scare you silly
Plans to scare people silly
Helen Lemme admits to lying awake a few nights recently, trying to think up ways to scare people silly.
Helen is in charge of the Haunted House at the Fall Festival over at St. Stephen’s Church this Saturday.
If you miss the event, don't fret. Helen is already gearing up for Halloween when her front lawn on Pine Oaks Circle is rearranged to resemble a cemetery, with creepy goblins and smoke effects and all.
But if you do have a chance to make it to St. Stephen’s, the Fall Festival features all kinds of fun autumn activities, from chowder to a farmers market to a costume parade.
And Helen promises that the Haunted House, open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., will scare all the people, “except the little ones!”
Dinner invite to disabled vets
Burt Payne is hoping that the free dinner will lure some new recruits to his Island organization, especially since spouses are invited as well.
Burt has been trying to figure out a way to increase membership in his Grand Island Disabled Veterans Group, which has found its membership dwindling. There is fun and friendship to be had, but also a sense of well being that comes from doing good deeds on the Island, such as raising money for scholarships, he said.
“I'm trying to get people to come out and enjoy themselves,” said Burt of the event, to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Moose Lodge on Grand Island Boulevard, just north of Fantasy Island. As for the menu, “I can promise that it'll be good!”
Disabled vets who might be interested should call Burt at 773-2823.
