HISTORY: GI history for week of Sept. 20 - Sept. 26

Students numbered 1,940 in the Grand Island school system, representing an increase of 200 pupils, according to the Sept. 18, 1958, edition of the Island Dispatch. That 11.5 percent increase was the largest of any school system outside Buffalo.

A traffic violation bureau was created by the Town Board to handle minor traffic law infractions and would operate in Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The town attorney, William W. Kinney, said it would function as “a simplified form of pleading guilty.” Kinney was authorized to prepare a single summons to be used by town constables.

A third Monte Carlo Night was to take place Friday at St. Stephen’s Barn on Baseline Road. Games were to take place at 8:30 p.m. and an orchestra was set to strike it up at 10:30 p.m. The event was sponsored by the Holy Name Society and Thomas Madigan was the general chairman. Others involved include Ralph Gabro handling prizes, Lavant Becker doing decorations and Bob Hamlen in charge of tickets.
