HISTORY: GI history for week of Sept. 13 - Sept. 19
50 YEARS AGO
William G. Hennigar would lead the fight for West River Parkway residents to dock boats and swim in the waters opposite their homes, according to the Sept. 11, 1958, edition of the Island Dispatch. The five-man committee took shape after a meeting in Town Hall to discuss the possibility of getting permission form the Niagara State Parks Commission to use the state land for town purposes.
The Couples Club of St. Timothy was getting ready to do-si-do, allemande right and go around the world at an upcoming Saturday night shindig. Mr. Leo Schlotman would be doing the calls while refreshments would be handled by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eber.
Vincent Fraser of Buffalo was given six months probation for showing up to a Town Board meeting in a blanket. A charge of public intoxication was dismissed because of a lack of evidence. Fraser had also been rescued four times from the Niagara River.
A call by Bishop Joseph A. Burke went out for an accurate count of Catholics in his diocese, including Grand Island. The census was considered necessary due to a "rapidly rising and shifting population."
