HISTORY: GI history for week of Aug. 23 - 29
50 YEARS AGO
Are the tolls illegal? That’s what a Buffalo law firm — hired by the Town Board — was entrusted to find out, according to the Aug. 21, 1958, edition of the Island Dispatch. The primary questions facing Louis DelCotto of Jaeckle, Fleischmann, Kelly, Swart and Augspurger would be the legality of the tolls and the possibility of having reduced rates for Islanders. The legal fees were not to exceed $500.
The new bowling center under construction required excavating Whitehaven Road for a water line connection. The building inspector, Gordon Gould, reminded residents to contact his department before installing lines. A pressure test should be performed before back filling, he said.
Islander Mrs. W. Ivan Wilder would be soon conducting the 100-member Children’s Community Chorus of the Tonawandas at the famous musical amphitheater at the Chautauqua Institute. Recently, her niece was married in the garden of her East River Road home.
