Shuttle bus service to Buffalo was discontinued a month ago, but officials hoped an increased population on the Island would allow service to resume, according to the Aug. 14, 1958, edition of the Island Dispatch. The service was operating at a loss for years but sustained by the mainline operations.
A first-ever regatta for the recently formed Grand Island Boating Association was set to take place Sunday at the Bedell House dock in Ferry Village. The 18 heats were to commence 1:20 p.m. Some early entries included Miss Chevy, Ron Ehde; Suddenly, Bob Schroeder; Allegro, owned by Ed Galley and piloted by Duke Selle; Hula Gal, Ed Trayford; and Storm Along, Gordie Reed.
More than 20 Americans were fined $10 each recently by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for landing on Navy Island without a customs permit.
On sale at the Grandyle Pharmacy was an "Aerosol Bug Bomb" for 88 cents. Hershey's syrup was two for 23 cents, and Woodbury Soap was four for 25 cents.
